Part 14: Entering the Unknown

“Nagata where did you come from?” Hitori asked the young council member.

“I…I can not say for now, my lady. I will explain when the time comes.” Nagata answered.

Hitori nodded while the triplet guards returned with a boat. There was only one problem; the boat had only room for 4, while they were with 8. The guards already wanted to go back to get another boat, but they suddenly spotted the two Sendo warriors guarding the lake.

“Lady Hitori…”

“…it will be too risky…”

“…to get another boat.”

“We’ll have…”

“…to do it…”

“…with one.” The triplet guards said separately.

Hitori stepped into the boat, turned around and looked at all of them.

‘Who am I going to take along?’ She wondered, ‘Hana is my best friend, and Nagata can give some good advise. But we don’t know what is in that cave, so I should take a guard along.’ Quickly, Hitori made up her mind, “Nagata, Kino and Wevli will come along with me. Hana, Zesshou, Wevles and Wevlum will stay here and protect the lake.” She decided.

Nagata walked to Lighting, taking his sword that was tied to his saddle.

“You be good now Lightning.” He softly whispered to his best friend.

All went into the boat and Nagata and Wevli started to row to the island. Slowly they walked to the stairs revealed by the phenomenon. With their swords ready, Nagata and Wevli took the lead, down the stairs.

Seeing their tribe leader, council members and brother going down the mysterious stairs, Wevles and Wevlum grabbed their own swords and stood protectively before Hana and Zesshou. Preparing for a 2 on 2 fight. Only the Sendo warriors did not run to Wevles and Wevlum. Instead they quickly turned their horses and fled towards the Sendo village. Wevles and Wevlum ran after them, but the 2 brothers couldn’t beat 2 horses by just running. Suddenly, they saw something flashing aside them. Young, brave Zesshou had quickly grabbed Lightning’s bridles and stormed after the 2 Sendo warriors.

“Be careful…”

“…young Zesshou!!!!” Wevles and Wevlum screamed.

Zesshou had no idea what to do. He was gaining on the 2 Sendo warriors, but he was alone, had low fighting experience and, most important, no weapon. With no clue of what to do, he kept on storming to the 2 Sendo warriors.

The stairs seemed to take forever. Turning and twisting they went down the bluish stone steps. The lower they came, the darker it became. With no light, they soon couldn’t see where they were walking anymore.

“Geez it’s dark in here, dark in here, dark in here.” Nagata’s voice echoed against the walls.

Hitori heard some other noises aside her. Kino had grabbed his sack with herbs he always wore with him. Before they had started to ascend the stairs, he quickly had grabbed a stick. Kino looked for the Firethorn herb, an herb that started to burn if it got in contact with dead wood. Finally Kino found the Firethorn and carefully dropped it on the edge of the stick. Immediately, the stick caught fire. Kino gave the burning stick to Nagata.

“Finally some light. Thanks Kino.” Nagata said

Kino just grumbled something like ‘your welcome’ and started to walk again. Kino still hated Nagata for taking his place as the wisest man in the tribe council.

With the feeling of having walked down too the middle of the Earth, the stairs finally stopped. All four of them sat down on the ground, resting from the ascend. Legs were aching from the long trip down the stairs. Hitori noticed that the ground felt kind of wet. The water element was strong. This has to be the cave where the Pearl of the Ocean lies. Right in front of them was an enormous cave. Probably filled with booby traps and puzzles.

“Ascend the realm of water but beware, to get what you seek, you must show yourself worthy too the ancient beast of water. One way and one way only can the mighty beast of Afrian be defeated. The answer lies within these walls.” Hitori read on the cave wall. She widened her eyes and read it again. “Look on the wall you guys. Can you tell me what it means?” Hitori asked.

Kino and Nagata looked at the inscription in the wall. Both at the same time they replied, “We should find a way in this cave to defeat the beast of water so we can claim the crystal. I WAS FIRST!!” They said while looking at each other angrily. Hitori shook her head. She shouldn’t have done Kino and Nagata in the same group. This could become a looooong trip.
