Yuji was one of the 143 warriors that accompanied Shuhan on his quest to destroy the Sendo. However he was forced to betray Shuhan and his group so he could save his wife Amae, who was captured by the Sendo. He killed the scout he was sent out with to find Sendo traps and returned to lead Shuhan and his followers into a trap.
Shuhan and the others were captured by Taoru. When Yuji was told he could see his wife he was hit by a barrage of arrows and was killed instantly. The Sendo had already killed his wife and buried Yuji next to her.
